The problem that innovation answers
Because of the theory-based approach in the tertiary education, students learn, above all, how to pass tests and examinations. University graduates do not have practical skills beyond the general experience they gathered during summer internships or seasonal jobs. The graduates are not able to make commercial use of the academic knowledge because they do not have the skills to utilize the theoretical expertise they acquired during their studies in production, service or organization environment. They also do not have general skills, such as teamwork, time and work management, and practical knowledge of corporate, administrative and technological processes specific to a given profession, company or production plant. The competence gap is the discrepancy between the requirements of a job and the set of skills the graduate possesses.
How does innovation work?
“Competence gap” is a method and a web-based tool for examining students' learning needs when organising student internships. This solution makes it possible to identify gaps between the curriculum and the actual requirements of the work environments and to address the identified discrepancy in the program of the student internship. The key feature of the tool is the catalogue of professional activities, usually used by assessment centers, assigned to the learning outcomes of the study and internship program. The organization of a competence gap-oriented student internship starts with a competence workshop where a competence model for the selected job is developed. Students, enterprises and competence experts take part in such workshops. The result of the workshop is a profile of the position to be filled by the intern with a set of skills the students have acquired in the field of study for which the student internship is organized. Optionally, the interns can describe the position they fill during the internships or take part in an internship workshop with employers where they verify the initial competence profile of the relevant position. This area of the model is used to develop profiles for new positions, but the innovation user can choose from ready-made profiles for 6 different positions linked to 3 fields of study.
