About innovation

The nature of innovation

The problem that innovation answers
Poland lacks systemic support for dementia patients, their relatives and caregivers. The relatives have to take care of dementia patients (including organizing their leisure activities) on their own. Existing educational materials to supportfamilies in stimulating dementia patients are usually in the form of notebooks, which patients associated with coercion.
How does innovation work?
The game 'Gates of Memory’ aims to stimulate the dementia patients and strengthen their bond with the family (by improving communication, bringing back the patient's memories and making their relatives aware of their capabilities). Both the patients and their relatives can spend time together playing the game. It also improves communication within the family. The game contributes to creating a safe environment and trust between the caregivers and the patient. It can be used to slow down the disease progress and support the diagnostic process. It also plays a therapeutic role as it stimulates the cognitive functions of patients, e.g. speaking, abstract thinking, general knowledge, memory, spatial awareness, concentration.

Dementia patients who tested the innovation 'Gates of Memory’ enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together the most. They also said that everybody was friendly to one another, there were no arguments, but lots of discussions. Caregivers who tested the game pointed out that it stimulates the patient. It forces their brain to work, helps to exercise and test the patient's memory and reaction time, and at the same time it is a source of joy. The game motivates dementia patients to exercise their memory. It increases their sociability, their perseverance in fighting the illness, sense of security, good mood, flexibility in thinking.
