The problem that innovation answers
The recruitment of people with intellectual disabilities is associated with career counseling, psychological assistance, training and workplace support. Such recruitment is most often carried out by specialised Assisted Employment Agencies. However, they have limited resources and capabilities to convince employers to hire people with disabilities. Additional support is required.
Another issue here is the fact that people with intellectual disabilities are usually hired to carry out simple manual jobs. Employers and recruiters tend to overlook the potential of these people, fearing that complex tasks are beyond the capabilities of people with disabilities. Although, with the right approach, clear structure, defining tasks specifically and in a supportive work environment, the effectiveness of these people can be the same or often even higher than that of non-disabled people.
How does innovation work?
The key element of the innovation is the engaging and inspiring training game ‘(un)Fulfilled potential’, intended for employers which can also be successfully utilised by organizations and institutions. The game helps change mindsets and attitudes regarding the employment of people with intellectual disabilities.
In addition to the game, the overall innovation includes toolkits and handbooks to support the change process. Knowledge and Inspiration Box is a collection of information and best practices on the employment of people with intellectual disabilities. Recruitment Tool Box describes the process of hiring people with disabilities and suggestions on the recruitment process.
The elements of gamification (a method utilising mechanisms from games outside of games) used in the innovation are designed to draw interest and entertain, while teaching new skills.
