The nature of innovation

The problem that innovation answers
The innovation addresses the limited access to information on specific needs, care practices and health of a dependent person in the absence of their long-term caregiver. This is one of the reasons why paramedics cannot often properly assist and support people with disabilities. If the long-term caregiver dies, becomes ill or is in an accident, people with multiple disabilities who cannot communicate verbally lose the only person who knows how to communicate with them and care for them.
How does innovation work?
As part of the innovation, “Passport to Life” was prepared. It is a set of standard information on how the nonspeaking individuals with multiple disabilities function and communicate. It includes analogue and digital elements. The analogue part is the paper version of the passport and a box to store it at the dependant’s residence and a silicon wristband with the dependant's Personal Identification Number as well as the telephone number of the association. The electronic part is an app that compiles the information in an online database. It consists of three levels – a basic one with the same information as in the paper version of the passport, and two additional extended levels.
Who is the innovation for?
Non-speaking adults with multiple disabilities, their caregivers and their community.
Who can implement the innovation?
– Parents; – Caregivers; – Social workers; – Hospital personnel; – Paramedics.
Products resulting from testing
A paper version of the passport, a store box, a silicone wristband with the Personal Identification Number and a contact telephone number – An app to compile information on the dependant in an online database – An instruction manual – Technical specification – A summary report and innovation trial report – A leaflet
Results achieved as a result of testing
The caregivers received a tool to safeguard their dependants when they are not there. With “Passport to Life” paramedics are now able to get the basic information about the non-speaking person with disabilities.
