About innovation

The nature of innovation
Usługa
The problem that innovation answers
People with disabilities require assistance when shopping in self-service stores, however there are no shopping assistants to help such people
How does innovation work?
“Shopping without Barriers” is a new system to increase the self-reliance of people with disabilities when shopping in self-service stores. Under this project, special buzzers will be installed in self-service stores and people with disabilities entering such stores could use them to indicate their wish to be assisted while shopping. The assistant would lead such person to a specific product, read aloud its contents, check its weight, expiry date or help to get the product off the shelf. The innovation also provides for the training of the store staff on how to support people with disabilities. The innovation may be implemented without generating huge costs and it does not require additional laws. However, its benefits are enormous. The proposed innovation increases the quality of life and the daily functioning of people with disabilities and it makes them significantly less dependent on their caregivers. In addition, it is an opportunity for the stores to attract a new group of customers.

Results achieved as a result of testing
The model of a system called “Shopping without Barriers” was developed. 8 people tested it for six months in three stores of the retail chain ‘Lewiatan’. Participants were very pleased, but also surprised by how much influence they had on the final model of the tested innovation. The opportunity to develop a prototype buzzer, fully meeting their expectations, made them more aware of their needs.
