The problem that innovation answers
People with dementia experience particular exclusion from community, cultural life. The specific nature of their condition is burdened with a number of stereotypes, half-truths and negative stories that further isolate these people in their interactions with the community. Recognising culture as a space where important processes (including therapeutic ones) can take place is an important task facing public cultural institutions in Poland.
How does innovation work?
Museum workshops for people with dementia diseases conducted according to a scenario prepared by the innovators. At the end of the workshop, participants receive diplomas and souvenir materials, and their carers and supervisors receive an a guidebook (all these materials are included in the guidebook). The workshop guide includes questionnaires - with the help of these questionnaires the level of knowledge of the museum's educational team about dementia diseases can be identified. This will allow adequate training to be planned. A report (also available in the guide) should be used to analyse the data obtained from the questionnaires.
Who is the innovation for?
Older people diagnosed with dementia or similar conditions and their family carers.
Who can implement the innovation?
The initiator of the implementation of the innovation can be: the management of the institution, the staff or a person from outside the museum (e.g. a family or institutional carer, another person interested in improving the quality of life of families of which a person with dementia is a part).
Products resulting from testing
A model for running workshops with a guide and materials for organisers.
Results achieved as a result of testing
The innovation creates conditions for people with dementia conditions to come into contact with art collections, and equips museum educators with the knowledge necessary to work with this audience group. Thus, it reduces the social isolation of the elderly, bringing joy and smiles to the faces of senior citizens and giving respite to their caregivers.
