The problem that innovation answers
Young people with intellectual disabilities show great interest in issues concerning their own sexuality and parental readiness. At the same time, teachers are reluctant to address those topics because they do not feel competent enough to teach it. Since sex education is not included in the general curriculum of schools preparing people with disabilities for work, there are no readily available training or teaching materials.
How does innovation work?
The educational board game 'Life challenges' is a tool for teachers/therapists to conduct sex education classes for people with intellectual disabilities. The game comes with instructions and a mentor guidebook which describes how to use the game. The mentor guidebook also includes a glossary of terms used in the game to facilitate the teaching process. The game develops the players' knowledge and skills on the broad topic of human sexuality. The task cards include questions for the players who draw tasks within three difficulty levels and answer the questions. At each difficulty level, there are are seven thematic categories (51 questions in each category): sexual identity; sexual awareness; sexual/intimate behaviour; intimate relationships; romantic relationships; sexual violence; parenting. The game increases the awareness of one’s own feelings and needs. It develops the ability to make informed choices, respect others and talk openly about one’s own feelings. It also reinforces a positive attitude towards one's own sexuality.
